Passing of the Shield Showcases Heart of Elwood’s School Community

In a heartwarming celebration of tradition, connection and new beginnings, kindergartners from Harley Avenue Primary School and graduating seniors from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School gathered on the high school football field on June 3 for the second annual Passing of the Shield ceremony. During the event, seniors passed a ceremonial shield to the district’s youngest learners, symbolizing the bond between the older and younger students in the Elwood school community while welcoming a new generation of students and honoring the Class of 2026.

The event was led by John Glenn Principal Irene McLaughlin and Harley Avenue Principal Julie Bilello and was sponsored by the schools’ PTSA and PTA.

“It was an incredibly special, emotional morning,” Board of Education member Tom Scarola said. “Seeing the oldest and youngest Elwood Knights spend time together, sharing smiles and asking each other questions, truly showcased the heart of our community. The future is so bright. A massive thank you to the PTA, our amazing Elwood staff members and all the families who attended and helped make this beautiful new tradition possible.”
